MY APPROACH TO ART THERAPY

I tend to work non-directively allowing the client to lead the therapy, although if requested I can work directively. I believe the relationship between therapist and client is of paramount importance. I am an integrative therapist selecting models and methods from different approaches to best suit a particular client and context. I think that Art Therapists can use aspects of many therapeutic approaches because of the three way process between the therapist, client and art. Using art as a method of communication quickly taps into the unconscious, which can then be thought about and worked through consciously. I use a psychodynamic approach, focusing on the sub-conscious to examine unresolved conflicts. I am interested in neuro-biology and attachment theory examining how early relationships shape you as a person. I also use aspects of the person-centered approach - I believe everyone has the capacity for change and growth. This approach focuses on the 'here and now' and the conscious mind.

SPECIALIST AREAS

I work with children and adolescents with a range of needs, including young people with severe emotional, social and behavioural difficulties, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Attachment Disorders. I also work with young people with other difficulties including low self-esteem, family problems and trauma.

Art Therapy can be beneficial to children, adolescents and adults of all ages.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FEEL THAT ART THERAPY COULD BE BENEFICIAL FOR YOU OR YOUR CHILD?

Please contact me either by phone or email indicating who the therapy is for. We can then organise an initial consultation, which is an opportunity to discuss concerns, to ask questions and to decide if Art Therapy would be suitable for you / your child.

If the therapy is for your child then usually I would meet with you and your child for part or all of this consultation session. There may be times where it is useful for the parent to be part of the therapy in some way, perhaps being present at times during a session. In some circumstances Art Therapy can be offered as a joint venture between yourself and your child. If the client is adolescent it may be that the parent does not need to be present for any of the therapy. Again all of this can all be discussed during an initial consultation.

I can offer both long term and short term therapy and this can be discussed as therapy progresses. Art Therapy is a flexible form of psychotherapy which can be beneficial to a wide variety of clients.

My session length is usually forty minutes to one hour and the fee would be dependent on this.
